Traineeship opportunities

To apply for a traineeship with the ICRC, you must have obtained a first degree and be available for 12 months.

Qualifications needed:

Please note
  • We only accept a very limited number of trainees each year.
  • The selection process for the Legal Division takes place in June, and you must submit your application during May.
  • Remunerated 12 months traineeships are available at Geneva headquarters only.
  • We do not have any traineeship positions within our delegations abroad and do not offer summer traineeships.
  • The ICRC does not recruit volunteers. If you want to volunteer to work for the Red Cross/Red Crescent, please contact your National Red Cross/Red Crescent Society.

    • A higher university degree or diploma equivalent to a master's degree in a relevant field (law, international relations, history, education, etc.).
    • An excellent command of both French and English (fluency in one and a very good working knowledge of the other).
    • Age between 25 and 35.
    • A strong interest in humanitarian action and the ICRC.
    • The ability to think strategically, to express ideas clearly - both orally and in writing - and to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Prior experience with an international organization, NGO or a Red Cross or Red Crescent society would be a definite asset.
    • Candidates with knowledge of additional languages such as Russian, Arabic and Spanish are particularly encouraged to apply.

If you fulfil the above-mentioned criteria, you can apply for a traineeship position (only) by sending the following three documents:

    1. A letter of application.
    2. Your CV.
    3. The completed traineeship form (see below).

    to rh_ce.gva@icrc.org.

We will only consider your application if you submit all three documents.

If the unit responsible selects your application you will receive a reply within six weeks. Otherwise, no reply will be sent.
