The ICRC has been present in Angola since 1975, the year which marked the outbreak of the conflict that has been devastating the country for almost 30 years.
Since the Luena peace agreement was signed in 2002 the ICRC has gradually been reducing its activities and its presence in the country as humanitarian needs have decreased. It has handed over its physical rehabilitation programme to the Angolan Ministry of Health and has ended its action to restore family links, having first provided the authorities with a list of persons still being sought, including unaccompanied children. 26-3-2009 Angola: the end of an eraThe ICRC has worked continuously in Angola since 1975. The conflict that ravaged the country having ended seven years ago, it is about to close its delegation in Luanda but will continue to monitor the situation from the regional delegation in Pretoria. Maryse Limoner, head of delegation, describes the humanitarian situation today, explains the ICRC’s plans for the future in the country and shares a few lasting memories.
