The ICRC has been working in Chile since 1973. It supports the Chilean authorities in their efforts to ratify international humanitarian law treaties and advises them on how to incorporate the provisions of those treaties into domestic legislation. The ICRC also promotes the introduction of humanitarian law into the doctrine, training and exercises of the Chilean armed forces and into the curricula of the country's universities and secondary schools.

In Chile, as in over 70 countries worldwide, ICRC delegates visit detainees to check on their material and psychological conditions of detention and on their treatment. The detainees include persons being held in connection with the situation of the Mapuche indigenous population.

The ICRC also works together with the Chilean Red Cross, helping to strengthen its response capacity and assisting it with its humanitarian activities. Since 2007, the ICRC has supported health-care projects for rural communities in the Araucanía region of southern Chile.
