The ICRC regional delegation in Nairobi has a dual purpose. Firstly to promote IHL and carry out operations in the three countries covered, namely restoring family links for refugees, helping people injured, displaced or otherwise affected by internal disturbances or unrest, visiting detainees that fall within its mandate, and supporting the development of the national societies. Secondly, to provide logistical and technical support for ICRC operations in the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region, or even further afield.
