Section ICRC films - From the field Darfur, Indonesia, Uganda, Nepal…. over the past twelve months, ICRC news cameras have traveled to conflict zones which are often inaccessible to main-stream journalists. They have been able to record the realities behind the news headlines, to show the impact of war on the lives of ordinary people, and the efforts of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement to bring relief. The result is a brand-new series of films offering insight direct From the Field. Short and to the point, the films show what it’s like for civilians living in war-affected areas today. By meeting and talking to the victims of war, as well as ICRC delegates, the films create a vivid picture of the problems of living and working in conflict zones. How does it feel to be captured and then escape from armed fighters? What are the problems of living without a functioning water supply or basic medical care? How do families displaced from their homes cope with day to day life? Each film also shows the range and scale of Red Cross/Red Crescent and ICRC work to help and protect the victims of war in a variety of countries and contexts. Gaza: paying the price ![]() Civilians are counting the cost of the 3 week conflict in January 2009, which claimed more than a thousand lives and dealt a heavy blow to the economy of Gaza, a territory already shattered by decades of conflict and deprivation. The international community pledged billions of dollars in aid, but restrictions on essential raw materials going into Gaza will have to be lifted if Palestinians are to rebuild their lives. Worse still, new strains are emerging which do not respond to normal treatment. In some cases, a spell in prison could mean a death sentence. But in Kyrgyzstan, a new treatment programme is giving hope to prisoners infected with the deadly, drug-resistant forms of TB. Together, the ICRC and the Haitian Red Cross are providing an ambulance service for the sick and wounded, repairing water points and seeking to give some hope again to the people of Cité-Soleil. In many cases, the only contact between the men and their families is through censored letters passed on by the ICRC and Red Crescent. Despite the 2005 peace agreement, clashes continue, terrorizing local people.
