Section ICRC films - From the field Darfur, Indonesia, Uganda, Nepal…. over the past twelve months, ICRC news cameras have traveled to conflict zones which are often inaccessible to main-stream journalists. They have been able to record the realities behind the news headlines, to show the impact of war on the lives of ordinary people, and the efforts of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement to bring relief. The result is a brand-new series of films offering insight direct From the Field. Short and to the point, the films show what it’s like for civilians living in war-affected areas today. By meeting and talking to the victims of war, as well as ICRC delegates, the films create a vivid picture of the problems of living and working in conflict zones. How does it feel to be captured and then escape from armed fighters? What are the problems of living without a functioning water supply or basic medical care? How do families displaced from their homes cope with day to day life? Each film also shows the range and scale of Red Cross/Red Crescent and ICRC work to help and protect the victims of war in a variety of countries and contexts. ICRC filmGaza: paying the price  Civilians are counting the cost of the 3 week conflict in January 2009, which claimed more than a thousand lives and dealt a heavy blow to the economy of Gaza, a territory already shattered by decades of conflict and deprivation. The international community pledged billions of dollars in aid, but restrictions on essential raw materials going into Gaza will have to be lifted if Palestinians are to rebuild their lives. V-F-CR-F-01016-V Kyrgyzstan: TB behind bars  In parts of Central Asia, rates of tuberculosis have reached record levels. Rates are particularly high in prisons where the disease spreads easily. Worse still, new strains are emerging which do not respond to normal treatment. In some cases, a spell in prison could mean a death sentence. But in Kyrgyzstan, a new treatment programme is giving hope to prisoners infected with the deadly, drug-resistant forms of TB. V-F-CR-F-00991-V Chechnya: rising from its ashes  In Grozny, the streets of the market are full. But despite the rebuilding, it’s hard to find a decent flat or a proper job. Some people have started their own businesses thanks to the ICRC, such as Taiza who is making mattresses. But as Grozny rises from its ashes, other families still struggle to come to terms with the past, desperate to know what has happened to their missing relatives. Tens of thousands have fled, scattering deeper into the equatorial forest and setting up makeshift camps, where they rely on aid to survive. V-F-CR-F-00959-V Somalia: surgeons fight for life  In 2007, intense fighting in Mogadishu has pitted military forces from the Transitional Federal Government, backed by Ethiopian troops, against fighters from Somalia’s Islamic Courts. Hospitals have been stretched to capacity. Surgeons at Medina and Keysaney hospitals have treated more than 4,000 wounded people – twice as many as in 2006. This film shows the extraordinary work of surgeons fighting to save lives in the midst of war. Families from Salfit and Hebron talk about the trauma of living with military operations, being denied access to their land and facing constant restrictions on every aspect of life. V-F-CR-F-00945-V Colombia: searching for safety  Colombia has been ravaged by over four decades of armed conflict. An estimated three million people have fled violence in the countryside. In this film, we meet Carmen, Maria and Anna who have moved to Bogota in search of safety. They survive, despite their minimal income and the constant fear of further violence, receiving some help from the ICRC's emergency assistance programme. V-F-CR-F-00936-V2 Liberia: homecoming in Gorlu  After 14 years of war, the villagers of Gorlu in Lofa County are finally starting to come home. But life is hard, especially for the women. Lofo, grandmother of seven, was forced out of the village 10 years ago and she's lost everything. But with tolerance and humour, she is determined to put down her roots again. V-F-CR-F-00936-V1 Haiti: changing Cité-Soleil  The Cité-Soleil shantytown in Port-au-Prince has been the scene of deadly clashes between armed groups and UN forces. Local people live in abject poverty against a backdrop of violence, without even basic services to make their lives more bearable. Together, the ICRC and the Haitian Red Cross are providing an ambulance service for the sick and wounded, repairing water points and seeking to give some hope again to the people of Cité-Soleil. V-F-CR-F-00916-V Congo Kinshasa: the hidden battlefield  Brutal rape has become commonplace in some parts of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, an area plagued by warring groups who prey on local people with little fear of retaliation. V-F-CR-F-00917-V Lebanon: a summer under the bombs  The month-long conflict that raged between Hezbollah and Israel brought the Lebanese summer to a violent end. Once again, civilians paid the highest price. Under the falling bombs, ICRC and Lebanese Red Cross aid workers struggled to evacuate the wounded and get food and water to the survivors. Amid the devastation and the unexploded bombs left behind by the conflict, can life ever return to normal? After decades of war the country is littered with landmines and explosives which continue to kill and maim. V-F-CR-F-00908-V Family messages, a lifeline in Yemen  Its been over four years since the first prisoners were moved to US place of detention in Guantanamo Bay. In many cases, the only contact between the men and their families is through censored letters passed on by the ICRC and Red Crescent. It is little enough but the messages bring hope and comfort to a number of families in Yemen who are desperate for news. V-F-CR-F-00897-V Darfur: living in the shadow of conflict  Hundreds of thousands have lost their lives or been forced from their homes during the recent conflict in Darfur. Despite the 2005 peace agreement, clashes continue, terrorizing local people. By maintaining contact with all sides, the ICRC is able to treat the wounded, run mother and baby clinics and run livestock vaccination campaigns, safeguarding the basic means of survival for the nomads of Darfur. V-F-CR-F-00893-V Saving lives in Kashmir  When the earthquake of October 2005 struck the mountainous regions of Kashmir, it caused thousands of deaths and left millions homeless. The ICRC found itself in a race against time to help the sufferers. Eight-year-old Sony is one of the evacuees - his hand is saved by an operation in Muzaffarabad Field Hospital.
