The ICRC regularly visits people held by the Afghan authorities or by international forces (US and NATO) in connection with the armed conflict and assesses their detention conditions and treatment and whether fundamental judicial guarantees are being respected. If necessary, the ICRC holds confidential talks with the detaining authorities to communicate its concerns and seek improvements.
