Israelis and Palestinians: "Side by Side or Face to Face"
50 years of photography by Jean Mohr.
An exhibition produced by the ICRC and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum (MICR).

This exhibition of some 70 photos portrays day-to-day life in Israel and the Palestinian territories between 1949 and 2002. It shows ordinary people, the worried faces of women, solemn old men and the expectant attitude of the young. It also bears witness to the commitment of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and its local partners, the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the Magen David Adom.

Taking us on a journey through time, Jean Mohr’s work reflects in its own subtle way the darker shades of unrest, sometimes interspersed with a gleam of hope.

Jean Mohr is a photographer based in Geneva.

Over a period of 50 years, but mainly between 1960 and 1990, his travels as a photo reporter for the ICRC, the League (today, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, the Joint Distribution Committee and a good number of other bodies have taken him to almost every part of the world.

Aged 77, Jean Mohr is still pursuing his profession with passion. He knows the ICRC well, having worked as a delegate in Jericho and Hebron in 1949 and 1950 before embarking on his career in photography. His pictures could be said to constitute a record of the conflict, as the earliest ones were taken in the Palestinian territories in 1949 after his assignment as an ICRC delegate in the refugee camps. He has returned to Israel and the Palestinian territories on several occasions, notably at the time of the Six-Day War in 1967 and again in the following two decades. In October 2002, Jean Mohr went back to the area to prepare a photo report on ICRC operations.

An exhibition organized by the ICRC and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum (MICR), Geneva, Switzerland.
Exhibition coordinators: Jean-François Berger, Roger Mayou, with the collaboration of Jean Mohr.
ICRC producer: Paul Oberson
