Focus: The first ones

They are the first ones on the scene. After the bomb blast, after the alarm sounds, they are on their way, on foot, in an ambulance or whatever it takes. With all the talk in international circles about supporting and protecting local humanitarian action, it's a good time to remind ourselves what first responders face in their daily lives. 

These photos of first responders provide a glimpse into the daily dangers people on the front lines face. They also offer a chance to reflect on concrete things the international community can do to ensure that first responders are better supported and protected. After all, one day, our lives may depend on it.
