ICRC director-general travels to Ukraine to meet authorities and communities being assisted

Geneva (ICRC) -The director-general of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Robert Mardini, is in Ukraine this week to take stock of the ICRC’s humanitarian activities. He will visit programmes around Kyiv and in Mykolaiv.

Mr Mardini plans to meet with the Ukrainian Red Cross and other Red Cross and Red Crescent partners, as well as local and national authorities. He also intends to meet Ukrainian communities supported by the ICRC, including family members of prisoners of war.

In his engagements, Mr Mardini will reiterate our long-standing commitment to helping all victims of the international armed conflict in Ukraine. He will also talk to ICRC staff about the challenges they face.

A news conference with Mr Mardini is planned for Wednesday, 31 August in the afternoon or early evening with the exact timing and location still to be confirmed. It is open to members of the media in Kyiv; it will not be streamed online.

Mr Mardini plans to travel to Russia in the near future to continue the ICRC’s bilateral discussions on humanitarian issues related to the international armed conflict.
