ICRC President Peter Maurer paid a two-day visit to Iran in December 2016 to meet Iranian officials and take part in an international conference on "Islam and international humanitarian law (IHL)".
In his meeting with President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society Amir Mohsen Ziaee, President Maurer discussed various conflicts in the region, IHL and mutual cooperation. He also met First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araghchi, Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and Minister of Defense Brig. General Hossein Dehghan.
President Maurer also attended the opening ceremony of the international conference on Islam and IHL that was held in the city of Qom. In his speech, he highlighted the key and positive role of religion in containing extremism and creating peace.
