Peru: Prisons in the Peruvian Altiplano receive suitcase libraries

With great enthusiasm, 150 detainees at the Penitentiary Establishment for Women of Lampa, in Puno, in the Peruvian Altiplano, received travelling books from the Suitcase Libraries Project promoted by the National Penitentiary Institute (INPE), the National Library of Peru and the ICRC.

"The arrival of the suitcase libraries motivates us to read and participate in cultural activities. Being in a prison does not impede our freedom to read and learn, and that is very motivating for us on the path to rehabilitation," said an inmate.

There are women of different nationalities, including Peruvians, Bolivians and Colombians, in Lampa prison. Several of them are in the process of learning to read and write, while others have a high level of education. But they all share a common interest and keen desire to develop the habit of reading.
