Republic of Korea: MoU with Ewha Womans University Law School to focus on IHL

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Ewha Womans University Law School have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation in the area of international humanitarian law (IHL) promotion in the Republic of Korea.

Georgios Georgantas, head of the ICRC's mission in the Republic of Korea, and Chong Kun OH, the dean of Ewha Womans University Law School, signed the agreement on the university campus in the Korean capital on 14 March.

OH said, "On behalf of the Ewha Womans University Law School, we'd like to express our profound gratitude to the ICRC for its cooperation." He added, "Our goal is to foster female legal experts who have both the expertise and the morality to meet the demands of our world head-on. We hope this agreement will help the ICRC fulfill its mandate of promoting IHL along with helping us accomplish our educational mission."

Georgantas said, "This MoU is the result of our common desire to develop awareness of and promote IHL in Korea. This agreement will help us in jointly organizing relevant training sessions for the university's qualified personnel as well as events to promote knowledge about IHL."

He explained that the MoU's aim is to ensure that IHL is integrated into the university's curriculum as a separate course. The agreement also aims to foster expertise in humanitarian law by supporting the International Humanitarian Law Library and Documentation Centre at the law school.

In addition, the MoU lays out a plan to further train the university's qualified personnel through ICRC activities organized both in and outside the Republic of Korea.

This agreement is the latest step in the organizations' eight-year-long association. Their cooperation dates back to 2010, when the ICRC regional delegation for East Asia and Ewha Womans University signed their first MoU to develop the study and promotion of IHL in the Republic of Korea.

The ICRC's mission in the Republic of Korea, opened in 2015, is tasked with promoting IHL and fostering support for ICRC activities in the region, among others.
