Assem El Essawi has just ended his mission as field coordinator for the ICRC in Syria. He says that the situation has worsened while he was working there and he left the country with visions of massive destruction everywhere he was able to travel. Despite growing despair, the people he met are finding ways to survive, and still prefer to live in a dire situation than to leave the country and become refugees.
