This illustrated booklet explains why, when and how the ICRC assists and protects people deprived of their liberty. It gives an overview of the various activities we carry out and programmes we run to help improve detainees’ treatment and living conditions.
The booklet also describes the support the ICRC gives both to people who are detained and those responsible for their care, with the ultimate aim of preserving life and dignity.
