Poland: ICRC vice-president exchanges with government officials

ICRC vice-president Gilles Carbonnier visits Poland & joins in the commemorations of the Geneva Conventions.

The ICRC’s vice-president, Gilles Carbonnier, visited Warsaw for the first time from 9 to 11 October to join in the commemorations of the Geneva Conventions. During the visit, he met with the deputy ministers of national defence and foreign affairs and the vice-chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Affairs to discuss Poland’s preparedness for fulfilling its obligations under IHL, including activating the National Information Bureau, delegated to the PRC. He also discussed finalizing an agreement to confirm the ICRC’s status in Poland and exchanged with the PRC leadership.

Furthermore, on 11 October, representatives of the Polish government, diplomatic corps and academia gathered at the University of Warsaw for: 

  • the opening of the Polish version of the exhibition Dialogues on Humanity, produced by the ICRC, Photo Elysée and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs
  • expert panel discussions on the “Universal consensus on the need to preserve humanity in war and the impact of harmful information on people protected by IHL, with the participation of the ICRC”, the PRC and academia
  • the award ceremony of the national student essay competition on the potential impact of disinformation and hate speech in armed conflict.
