Armenia/Azerbaijan: Body of Armenian citizen handed over

Geneva / Baku / Erevan (ICRC) – The body of an Armenian citizen who died in custody in Azerbaijan in August 2014 was repatriated today and handed over to representatives of the Armenian authorities in an operation facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The handover took place on the road between the Azerbaijani town of Gazakh and the Armenian town of Ijevan, at the international border.

On the basis of its mandate under the Geneva Conventions, the ICRC has been working in the region since 1992 in connection with the Nagorny Karabakh conflict. In its capacity as a neutral intermediary, the organization has repeatedly helped the authorities of Armenia and Azerbaijan make arrangements for the repatriation of human remains.
