Bangladesh: ICRC visits the Islamic Foundation

On 1 March 2020, the ICRC paid a courtesy visit to Anis Mahmud, the new Director General of Islamic Foundation and Additional Secretary to the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

An autonomous organization under the auspices of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Islamic Foundation was established by Bangladesh's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in 1975, with the purpose of promoting Islamic principles and research, and supporting the establishment and maintenance of mosques throughout the country.

The Islamic Foundation and the ICRC have previously worked together on a number of activities, including research into Islamic Law and IHL, and first aid training sessions for imams.

Charles Dorman-O'Gowan, the ICRC Asia Regional Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, thanked Mr. Mahmud for the warm welcome and ongoing collaboration, for which the ICRC is very grateful.
