Egypt: ICRC, Ain Shams University sign MoU on International Humanitarian Law

Cairo (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Egypt’s Ain Shams University signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on education and legal research on International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

The MoU will see the two entities cooperating in the field of IHL through organizing conferences, workshops, lectures and joint research projects.

The MoU was signed by Vice President of Ain Shams University Abdel-Fattah Saud and head of the ICRC Cairo delegation Jerome Fontana in a signing ceremony held at the university campus in Cairo.

This comes within the framework of the ICRC’s cooperation with universities to stimulate teaching and research on IHL as well as spreading understanding of the law and fostering its development.

Last December, Ain Shams University hosted the third national moot court competition on IHL, which was co-organized by the National Commission on IHL and the ICRC delegation in Cairo. The competition is an extracurricular activity in which students take part in simulated court proceedings.

The IHL is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. It aims to protect people who are not, or are no longer, participating in hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare.

The ICRC is an impartial, neutral, and independent organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence. It acts in response to emergencies and promotes respect for IHL and its implementation in national law. The ICRC is present in more than 90 countries around the world, including Egypt, where it has been working for over 100 years.
