Lebanon: Detainees' lives improved with the rehabilitation of Baalbek prison

Together with the Lebanese Internal Security forces (ISF), the ICRC finalized the rehabilitation of a district prison in Baalbek, eastern Lebanon.

This is the second of seven projects targeting district detention facilities throughout the country. Aging infrastructure and overcrowding made the situation almost unbearable for prisoners and those in charge. The ICRC regularly visits 23 ISF places of detention in Lebanon, which were originally designed to accommodate 3,500 inmates. But these facilities currently house 6,500 detainees, according to the Ministry of Justice.
