Rwanda: Promoting international humanitarian law in future decision makers

On 5 and 6 October 2016, Rwanda held its first ever IHL moot court competition. The event brought together law school students and faculty who worked in partnership with the ICRC and the Rwanda Red Cross Society.

The competition, held in Kigali, consisted of four teams each with three law students. The competing universities included the University of Rwanda, INES-Ruhengeri, The University of Lay Adventists of Kigali, and Kigali Independent University ULK. The format was a simulated war-crimes trial, in which the teams took turns playing the roles of both the prosecution and the defense.

This competition is part of a larger ICRC programme which aims to promote IHL in the country.

The Kigali Independent University ULK team won the competition. The team went on to represent Rwanda in the All Africa IHL moot court competition held from 12 to 20 November 2016 in Arusha, Tanzania.
