Young Humanitarian Writers competition: Winners announced

The ICRC and The National Press Club, together with the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC), recently announced the six winners of the 2017 Young Humanitarian Writers Competition. The competition, themed “Even wars have limits”, drew entries from all over Malaysia and was aimed at stimulating discussion and fostering understanding of some of the most pressing global humanitarian issues. 

While the first prize in the non-journalist (Malay language) category went to Sareeka Balakrishnan, the first prize in the non-journalist (English language) category went to Yuri Azrani Yuri Zaharin. The first prize in the journalist category was awarded to Mariah Ahmad of Astro Awani.

Associate professor Dr Mohd. Hisham Mohd Kamal of the International Islamic University Malaysia, who was one of the judges this year, said: “The competition was close as these young writers have demonstrated impressive writing style and their thoughts were articulated eloquently. We are very impressed with the humanitarian reporting and hope to see more next year.” ICRC legal officer Amirah Rushaliha Hamidon, another judge, said: “This competition has created awareness about international humanitarian law and its principles. Today, more than ever, there is a need to strengthen the protection accorded by international humanitarian law and not turn a blind eye to suffering.” She encouraged young people to help create a more humane society.

Winners

Non-journalist (Malay language) category:

  • 1st prize: Sareeka Balakrishnan - Penang
  • 2nd prize: Wan Noor Fadhilah Wan Ibrahim - Kuala Lumpur

Non-journalist (English Language) category:

  • 1st prize: Yuri Azrani Yuri Zaharin - Selangor
  • 2nd prize: Mustafa Amer Sanad Alrawe - Kuala Lumpur

Journalist category:

  • 1st prize: Mariah Ahmad, Astro Awani
  • 2nd prize: Amirul Mohd Sajadi, Bernama

The first prize winners will receive electronic gadgets worth 1,500 Malaysian ringgit (RM) while the second prize winners will receive electronic gadgets worth RM 1,000.
