Today, there are over 120 ongoing armed conflicts worldwide. As we mark the 75th anniversary of the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, international humanitarian law (IHL) faces mounting challenges, despite its universal endorsement and critical role in conflict.
The report “International Humanitarian Law and the Challenges of Contemporary Armed Conflicts” is the ICRC’s flagship legal report to present challenges and positions on pressing humanitarian concerns in today's conflicts. Presented every four years at the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the report describes humanitarian challenges and outlines ICRC’s actions, positions and areas of interest. Informed by the ICRC’s extensive field presence and bilateral engagement with belligerents, it addresses topics such as the protection of people in the hands of parties to armed conflict, the conduct of hostilities, new warfare technologies, and humanitarian action.
Hosted by the ICRC, this online event presented the latest Challenges Report and hosted a discussion of key challenges with the ICRC’s Chief Legal Officer, Cordula Droege, and the ICRC’s Director of Operations, Yasmine Praz Dessimoz.
