Democratic People's Republic of Korea

The ICRC mission in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been based in Pyongyang since 2002. Since 2020, access to the DPRK has been closed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The ICRC office in Pyongyang, with 12 resident colleagues, is being managed remotely from Beijing.

Our work in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Presently ICRC activities in the DPRK are suspended with the exception of limited support to physical rehabilitation centres and the DPRK Red Cross Society. The ICRC stands ready to resume its activities once access to the DPRK is regained to re-assess the humanitarian needs.

Prior to the 2020 suspension, the focus of our activities was on physical rehabilitation, health, the peri-urban water supply and sanitation, training in the safe disposal of explosive remnants of the Korean War, emergency preparedness, the promotion of the Geneva Conventions, and the capacity-building of the National Society.
