Australia: Responding to sexual violence in conflict

Whether in Syria, Central African Republic, or Papua New Guinea, sexual violence continues to be a devastating feature of war and conflict. Despite its prevalence, sexual violence remains in the shadows in many contexts, making it a challenge for humanitarian organizations to respond effectively to the needs of the victims. In this interview with the ICRC Australia Mission on a recent visit to Canberra, ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord discusses the serious impact of sexual violence on victims and their families and outlines how the ICRC is stepping up its humanitarian response. He also talks about how States, such as Australia, can take the lead in ensuring strong international efforts to address the issue.
