Geneva (ICRC) - The following is a statement from ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric on three years of war in Sudan.

The last three years of conflict in Sudan reflect a brutal pattern of warfare, exacerbated by drones and advanced weaponry, that shows utter disregard for human life and dignity.

Civilians across the country have faced unrelenting attacks. Millions have been forced to flee their homes and families separated. Sexual violence has become endemic despite its strict prohibition under international humanitarian law. Widespread attacks on civilian infrastructure and essential services have left entire areas without the basics people need to survive.

Humanitarian personnel have also repeatedly come under fire. Over the last three years, more than 20 Red Cross and Red Crescent workers and volunteers were killed while carrying out their lifesaving work.

The world cannot continue to turn a blind eye to horrors inflicted on civilians in Sudan. As the war enters its fourth year unabated, I call on the warring sides and all those with influence to respect and ensure respect for the rules of war. Each day of inaction costs more civilian lives, deepens suffering and narrows the pathway to peace.
