Event Info

Where: Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Equatorial

When: 06.06.2011-08.06.2011

The conference will bring together participants from Commonwealth Governments, their National Committees on international humanitarian law, as well as members of Commonwealth National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The aim of the meeting is to gather these participants from across the Commonwealth to increase capacity, commitment and activities in the realm of international humanitarian law implementation, to share experiences in national legal implementation and to discuss developments in IHL.  It is also a chance to preview international humanitarian law topics which are on the agenda of the Commonwealth Law Ministers meeting in July this year, to follow up on the 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and prepare for the 31st International Conference to be held 28 November - 1 December 2011.

The meeting is a follow up on the successes of similar conferences that were held in London, UK in 2003 and Wellington, New Zealand in 2007, both of which were seen as important in the preparation for the International Conferences of those years. These were supplemented in intervening years by meetings of National IHL Committees held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2005 and New Delhi, India in 2009.

The conference is an opportunity, taking advantage of the shared legal tradition, language and other bonds inherent in the Commonwealth, to move toward a common approach regarding the International Conference and international humanitarian law.
